Prizing Changes

With the release of Core 2020 Wizards of the Coast (WotC) is changing up how they handle prizing for Magic the Gathering at Wizard Play Network (WPN) stores.  There are no more event specific foils/promos. Instead we are allocated a specific number of promotional packs at the beginning of the season, for the entirety of the season, and are given suggestions on how to distribute the packs. We may distribute the packs at our discretion to best serve and continue to grow our community. 1 out of every 4 packs will be all foil and will be clearly marked as such. More information on what the promo packs will consist of can be found here.

Below is a description of how our prizing will work for different events during this set. Please note that we will no longer be issuing store credit in place of packs. The upgrade option is still available. If you wish to upgrade from a regular prize booster to Modern Horizons or Masters 25. To upgrade you simply pay the difference in price between the regular and premium pack.

Weekly Events

Standard

For Tuesday June 25th and Monday July 8th we will be using Japanese War of the Spark packs (8 per week) in place of Standard Showdown packs until the new promo packs come into effect. These will be the first 8 packs into the pool each of these weeks.

Prizing will be 1.5 packs (valued at $6.75 or less) per player into the prize pool. Every player will receive a participation pack and the .5 pack per player will be distributed among the top players.

Starting Monday July 15th one of the new promo packs will be awarded to the winner each week in addition to the other prizing.

Modern

Prizing will be 1.5 booster packs (valued at $6.75 or less) per player into the prize pool. Every player will receive a participation pack and the .5 pack per player will be distributed among the top players. If you are awarded multiple packs you can claim one Modern Horizon or Masters 25 pack for every two regular packs, or you can upgrade your regular packs as described above paying the difference between pack prices.

Starting Tuesday July 16th one of the new promo packs will be awarded to the winner each week in addition to the other prizing.

Draft

Prizing will be 1 booster pack (valued at $6.75 or less) for every 2 players to be distributed among the top players.

Starting on Thursday July 18th one of the FOIL promo packs will be awarded to the winner each week in addition to other prizing.

Sealed

Starting on release day, Friday July 12th, 1.5 booster packs (valued at $6.75 or less) will be added to the prize pool for every player. Every player will receive a participation booster pack from the prize pool along with a guaranteed foil from our FNM prize wall. The .5 booster pack per player will be distributed among the top players.

In addition to this the winner will receive one of the new Core 2020 Promo packs and we will award one additional FOIL promo pack at random among the participants in the event.

Commander

Every player will receive a participation booster pack (valued at $6.75 or less) at the end of their game. The table will vote on the coolest thing done during the game and the player chosen will receive a foil card from our FNM prize wall. (In games using the Planechase cards the prize wall foil will be awarded to the player who shifts to a randomly selected plane).

In addition one promo pack will be awarded at random to 1 player per flight (1 at 7:30pm and 1 at 9:30pm).

League

2 promo packs per league (we plan on running 3 leagues during the Core 2020 season) will be awarded. Specific achievement prizing will be announced at the start of each League.

Magic Weekends

Open House

4 promo packs will be awarded as part of Open House. 2 packs will be awarded at random, 1 each, to 2 players who come out to learn Magic the Gathering. An additional 2 packs will be awarded at random, 1 each, to 2 players who volunteer to teach new players as part of Open House.

Wrapping Up

In preparation for this new season of Magic, throughout May and June we experimented with some different models for prize support.  Many of the changes you see here are a result of feedback from our community.

We’re planning to use this prize model for “Core 2020 Season” (July, August, and September) and will evaluate it’s effectiveness over the next three months. We appreciate feedback from our community and look forward to seeing everyone out during the summer trying out some of the crazy new cards in Core 2020!
