About two weeks ago, I looked at the From the Vault Angels set since a friend of mine was curious about my opinion on one of his deck designs. At the time, I chose to look at his mono-white Commander deck and re-worked it, making it both a tribal and combo deck.
Now I will be looking at some of the other Angels in the Vault to see what Fires from Heaven & Hell we can rain down on the rabble!
This deck has a vastly different feel to its build than the mono-white. In the Triple H Deck, there were a lot of nifty angels that weren’t necessary beyond the life-gain combo aspect. However, this deck had to be very precise and picky to maintain the Bounce and Recursion themes.
Just about every angel either plays some major role in offense or defense, or has a “comes into play” ability that is priceless when used in conjunction with cards like Galepowder Mage or Flickerform. As in the Triple H deck, this deck utilizes Concerted Efforts, but it also much pickier about what we aimed for.
The choices for the Bounce theme were extremely hard and had to maintain the idea that if they bounced they couldn’t hurt you and they had a permanent effect. Therefore, cards like Admonition Angel or Angel of Serenity just didn’t work as well as something like the Ashen Rider or the Angel of Despair.
And you may have noticed that this deck required at least a couple critters that were not tribal. It had to be done just for the sheer power of the critters.
Beyond that, I couldn’t help myself and added in a small amount of combo beyond the Well and Efforts. With all the life gain potential still in there, Searing Meditation is a perfect fit.
Hopefully this deck sparks some curiosity about the potential merging of the three colours. Until next time when I look at the Eldrazi v. Zendikar decks for some tweaking, may your Angels soar, your strategy be golden and your opponents red and black!
