THE MANA DORK—Building A Commander Deck, Part 2

Welcome to Part 2 of Building ‎a Commander Deck!

Last time, we talked about how much land to run (38, usually, with as much “fast mana” as possible), and we broke down the rest of the cards into five categories: mana, draw, threats, answers, and synergy.

Today, we’re going to look at one of my own decks, and I’ll talk about which cards go into which categories and how I decide what to cut.

Tasigur, the Golden Fang

The deck we’ll be looking at is Tasigur’s Indulgences, a political deck with a combo finish. The goal is to fill my graveyard with answer cards, then use Tasigur’s ability to “shop them around” and make deals with other players until I’m in a good enough board position to win. Continue reading

We originally announced this sale through our Facebook page September 10th.

The response has been so fantastic that we added our previously played section at 30% off.  We’re running out of sale items, so we’re announcing that the 20% / 30% off sale will be running through this Sunday September 27.

THE MANA DORK—Building A Commander Deck, Part 1

A bunch of friends and I got together for a solid day of Commander on Saturday. Many of them are much more competitive than I am — if you’ve sat down with me in the store, you know how much I love playing politics! — ‎but I ended up performing surprisingly well. Decks I thought I’d tossed together out of janky cards functioned nicely, and decks that I’d tuned did their jobs beautifully.

‎So I figured I’d take a moment to talk about how I start to build a Commander deck, because I know it can be intimidating when you have 15,000-plus cards available to you!

This’ll be a two-part series: this time ’round, I’ll talk about the ratios of different cards you should include, and in two weeks, I’ll break down one of my decks‎ and talk about my card choices. Continue reading

Strictly Casual – Angelic Commander

by January 15, 2016

StrictlyCasual

About two weeks ago, I looked at the From the Vault Angels set since a friend of mine was curious about my opinion on one of his deck designs. At the time, I chose to look at his mono-white Commander deck and re-worked it, making it both a tribal and combo deck.

Now I will be looking at some of the other Angels in the Vault to see what Fires from Heaven & Hell we can rain down on the rabble! Continue reading

THE MANA DORK—Building a Social Contract

THE MANA DORK—Building a Social Contract

I used to have a player in my D&D group. This player was That Guy, in most of the ways you could be considered That Guy.

When playing a rogue, he’d steal from party members. When casting fireballs, he’d leave the fighter in the blast radius and ask, “You can take it, right?” If he happened to have a Charisma score above 12, every trip to the tavern would end with thirty minutes of seduction rolls.

All of his characters were mysterious and tragic, in that they wore long cloaks, constantly hid in the shadows or leaned against walls, and yet somehow still hogged 90% of the DM’s attention trying to show off how mysterious and tragic they were.

This was, of course, a problem. But why am I talking about this in a Magic column? Continue reading
