strictly casual – angelic commander

Strictly Casual – Angelic Commander By William D. O’Dell About a week ago, I had a friend ask me about looking at some decklists centered on the new From the Vaults: Angels set. Awesome – I can do that! However, there are about three things of note on the request. One: This friend has only been playing Magic for about seven months now. When my long-time sparring partners realized that I was teaching him, all there was were complaints and insults flung my way – for what reason I don’t know! 😉 Therefore he is an initiate of the Order Kill Bill, or in other words, he learned by being gifted decks created by me and then went from there. Two: This friend is building a deck for his wife because she likes Angels and they’re pretty. What can I say? We need more female players in this game! At the same time, my wife won’t play Magic with me because she and I are uber-competitive. Playing against her is a bad thing for our relationship. Three: Most of my friends don’t let me see their decklists for a number of reasons. Typically they have enough experience building decks they don’t really need or want my help and they also don’t want to give me forewarning. So this was kind of cool to see where my friend’s mindset...

THE MANA DORK—Pick a Pack of Pickled Commons 1: Answers by Jesse Mackenzie

Pick a Pack of Pickled Commons 1: Answers Last edition, I set up a little draft puzzle. So, let’s talk about some picks! Here were the packs that got passed to you: And here were two of your responses: I’m with Jimmy on the Topan Freeblade and Rhox Maulers in packs 1 and 2. Renown is a powerhouse mechanic in the current Limited environment, and if you’re looking for creature beats, little else stands out from those packs. (Talking about Troy’s UB control for a second, though: Sphinx’s Tutelage into Calculated Dismissal / Send to Sleep into Reave Soul? Not a whole lot wrong with that. You’re dealing damage to your opponent’s library instead of their health, but Sphinx’s Tutelage is still pretty powerful—a deck with that strategy even won GP San Diego!—and let’s not forget the benefits of drafting UB, which are pretty open colours in Origins drafts…) It’s the third pack where things get interesting, though. Okay, so you’ve got two uncommons when you should only have one. What does that mean? Someone wanted a common more than they wanted an uncommon. Someone’s already into an archetype—a set of themes or mechanics that unify certain cards throughout the set—and they’re drafting for that archetype rather than picking the Best Card Available. What’s not here? We know that some of the archetypes for Origins drafts are GW Renown,...

THE MANA DORK—Pick A Pack Of Pickled Commons by Jesse Mackenzie 8.4.15

My schedule has prevented me from attending an Origins draft thus far, which makes me very sad. So today, we’re going to do a little exercise. I’ve purchased three boosters of Magic Origins, and I’d like to see what you all think the best draft picks are. I’ve got my answers, which I’ll give in my next column, along with the best of the discussions around this post. There’s no prizes, but if you pick the same cards I do, I promise that I will personally bow to you when I see you in the store. (It’s a pretty good bow, actually. I’ve been working on my bow game, and I think I’ve got it down. The key is in a smooth descent, and in the position of the hands.) Anyway! Assume we’re in a triple-Origins draft, and we’re on the first pack. You have value-drafted the rare as your first pick—it’s worth enough money that you don’t want to actually play with it here. This pack gets passed to you: Not bad, not bad. Bounding Krasis is nice, and Topan Freeblade always doeswork in Limited. Here’s your next pack: That is a lot of black… and it just has to have that nice Rhox Maulers in the middle there, eh? Finally, the third pack gets passed to you: Two uncommons? Huh. That’s definitely a signal—somebody two or three...
